Roofers are an integral part of the construction and renovation industries. They provide an almost unimaginable service to live without rain, snow, and wind protection. A roofer’s job is to install and repair roofs on residential and commercial buildings. That is why you might have taken notice of local roofing companies around your area.
Different kinds of roofs need different materials, and the material will depend on where you are located. For example, if you live in a region with heavy snowfall, you might need a strong metal roof to withstand the weight.
You might need a new roof on your home if you want to stop any leaks or if it is coming down around you. A new roof will also make the house look nice and help with its value.
Are You in Need of a Roofer?
The first step to taking care of a leaky roof is determining whether you need a new roof. Sometimes, a good cleaning will fix the leak, but you want to be sure that it is just dirt and debris causing the problem. A leaking roof can be a significant issue for those who live in wet climates or regions that experience constant rain. This can lead to serious health and safety issues, both inside and outside the home.
Additionally, check your shingles for any noticeable cracks or other damage. If there are any tears in the shingles, then the water may be getting through to your house, and you should probably fix or replace the shingles.
So how do you know if what you need is a roofer? If there are any visible cracks in your shingles, this could signify that it may be time for a new roof. You might also want to get an estimate from a few different roofers to see the cost of getting a new roof. This can help you decide whether or not you wish to take care of it this year or if you should wait.
If your roof is starting to look old and worn out, then there are some things that you can do to spruce up the appearance. At Eason Roofing, we offer high-quality services for all kinds of roofs. So whether you need something traditional or something more modernized, we can help!
Roof Types Explained
There are many different types of roofs, with most types having several variations. Roofs serve to cover the building they are on and often protect it. They can be simple or very ornate, complex in design, or just a single surface, made out of many materials or just one. There are also several different shapes to roofs and ways to determine the “roof” of a building or structure.
Roofs can be classified by the shape and material from which it is built. Most roofs are made with at least one sloping surface that covers and protects the interior space underneath it. The most common classification is a flat roof and sloping roof.
The most common type of roof is flat and sloping roofs. A flat roof is a surface built at a level plane or inclined less than 45° from horizontal. The most common variation to this type of roof is for it to be either “built-up” or “tar and gravel”. Built-up roofs are composed of wood boards, plywood, and OSB sheathing. They are then layered with tar paper to act as a barrier for water to be channeled down below the roof deck. Lastly, gravel or stones are placed over the outermost sheets (tar paper) to protect them from erosion. Tar and gravel roofs are composed of tar paper and gravel. Tar is placed over the roof sheathing, and this is then covered with a layer or two of gravel.
A gable roof is made up by having both sides sloping downwards to the walls, meeting at a ridge at the top. The term ‘gable’ comes from gablet, an old English word for a small ornamental gable. Sometimes the sloping sides are covered with a surface that slopes down to the walls. A hipped roof has a similar appearance to a pyramid or gambrel roof. This type of roof also has four sloping sides, but they all meet at a ridge on the top of the building.
A hipped roof is a roof with four sloped surfaces, but they all meet at the ridge on the top of the building. The most common variation to this type of roof is for it to have hips. Hips are ridges that run along beside each plane of the main roof. Hips are typically smaller than the ridges they occur beside. Dormers are a feature that appears on a hipped roof and is also found on gable roofs. A mansard roof is very similar to a gambrel roof. The only difference is that it has four sloping surfaces rather than two or three.
A mansard roof is a hipped roof with two lower slopes having a steeper pitch than the upper slope and the lower pitches overhanging the upper. This design allows an attic to be built. A shed roof is any single-pitched roof with one sloping side or plane. The most common variation to this type of roof is for it also to be hipped or gabled. Depending on the shape, shed roofs can have dormers, hips, and valleys.
A skillion roof is a shed-roof variant in which one side of the roof has only vertical walls with no slant, while the other may have a slant to allow water run-off. This configuration is typically used for sheds, where only one side of the roof will be visible, but it can also be found on small residential structures.
As you can see, there are many variations of roofs around, and the ones on the list are only the cherry on top. What are the Current Costs of a Roof?
Individuals are often overwhelmed by complicated jargon and difficult-to-understand concepts when it comes to roofs. While many homeowners may enjoy sprucing up their homes with a fresh new look to increase curb appeal or add value, they may not realize that a roof does more than just protect a home from the elements. It plays an integral role in the overall appearance of a home, which is why many homeowners are choosing steeper roof pitches that can help to make their homes appear more contemporary.
While cost will vary depending on the size of your home and whether you’re doing a basic re-roof or adding onto your existing structure, you can expect to pay between $3500-$6500 for the installation of a 1,000 square foot roof. Again, these are standard costs that should be accurate within your local region.
What are Other Factors That Influence Roof Installation Cost?
If you’re installing a new metal roof or high-end shingles, prices will go up relative to the quality of material you’re choosing. In most cases, a roofer will charge a base rate that includes removing your existing roof and installing a new one if needed.
If you’ve decided to install a solar panel system with your roofing project, prices will increase due to added labor costs. Before the installation process begins, the roofer will want to ensure that your proposed installation site is appropriate and meets all local codes and requirements.
Do I Need a License to Install a Roof?
Different states have varying rules regarding who can replace or install a roof on residential properties. For the most part, however, an experienced professional with extensive training and certification will be necessary to work on a home. If you’re planning on tackling your roofing project yourself, make sure you have the skills needed before buying materials or contacting a contractor.
More often than not, homeowners can replace or install their roofs without incurring any added expense. In most cases, you won’t need to hire a roofer to provide you with an estimate or supervise the project. On average, the process will only take a weekend and can be completed with basic hand tools.
